John Troy is the Managing Attorney of Troy Law. As the principal attorney of Troy Law, Mr. Troy has continuously represented low-income immigrant workers, in wage-and-hour and employment discrimination cases in the New York State Supreme Court, and the Eastern and Southern District Courts of New York. Mr. Troy is additionally admitted to the United States Supreme Court, the First, Second, and Third Circuit Courts of Appeals, the Northern and Western Districts of New York, the Connecticut District Court, and the Illinois Central District Court. Mr. Troy has also appeared pro hac vice before the United States District Courts for the District of Massachusetts, for the District of New Jersey, for the Northern District of Illinois, for the District of Minnesota, and for the District of West Virginia. Mr. Troy graduated from the National Chengchi University in Taiwan and Penn State Dickinson Law in 1985.
Since 1989, Mr. Troy has continually and zealously led Troy Law as the premier employment litigation firm in the nation. We conduct a diverse practice and specialize in the recovery of minimum wage and overtime pay; recovery for tip theft, and advocacy on behalf of victims of workplace discrimination and sexual harassment. Troy Law has consulted with state and federal attorney general offices and agencies on wage theft issues and Troy Law cases have been cited in legislative initiatives such as the passage of the Rhode Island Amended Payment of Wages Act, which came into effect in 2024.
Mr. Troy has served as class and collective action counsel in numerous cases in federal district and the New York State court. He has written extensively on Fair Labor Standards Act and New York Labor Law minimum wage, overtime compensation, and record-keeping requirements: his op-ed on Taiwanese envoy Hsien-Hsien “Jacqueline” Liu’s fraudulent foreign labor contracting of two Filipino maids has been published in China Times, the fourth largest Taiwanese newspaper in circulation, and his interviews on wage-and-hour law and requirements has been featured in Sing Tao Daily, Hong Kong’s second largest newspaper, and World Journal, the largest Chinese-language newspaper in the United States. In recognition of his expertise in the area, Mr. Troy was invited as the Public Law Institute (PLI) faculty for its annual Employment Law seminar in 2017. He is also an invited panelist on the panel “Recent Trends and Strategic Considerations for Conditional Collective Actions under the Fair Labor Standards Act” at the National Employment Lawyers’ Association-New York 2022 Spring Conference on Representing Employees. Mr. Troy is a top-rated attorney selected to Super Lawyers 2023 through 2025 by Thomson Reuters. For his commitment to the advocacy of workplace fairness, Mr. Troy has been recognized with a special award in 2024 from The Shelley Leinheardt Workplace Fairness Fund, a joint project of Workplace Fairness and National Employment Lawyers’ Association, New York.
Mr. Troy is similarly adept in the field of commercial litigation, including bankruptcy litigation, and we regularly represent both FLSA judgment creditors and debtors to turn financial challenges into opportunities to move forward. He also has a proven track record in representing victims of personal injury and medical malpractice to obtain recovery.
Beyond employment litigation, Mr. Troy stewards consumer fraud class actions against corporations for their false, misleading or deceptive claims about their products. He is also a seasoned personal injury lawsuits and workmen compensation attorney. Mr. Troy has represented whistleblowers in qui tam lawsuits.
As a longstanding community-based law firm, Mr. Troy has also served the Flushing, and broader New York community with his extensive experience in undertaking general practice, including real estate transactions, family and employment-based immigration, contested and uncontested matrimonial matters.
